🌍 Activity Ideas: Out and About

Time in the community can look very different. There are a variety of activities you can plan and go about doing.

Sometimes there’s a clear plan, other times you’re simply looking for something that makes the day feel good.

This page is simply a collection of ideas. Think of it as a menu to help spark possibilities for what you could do.

A small note before you begin

These ideas are just prompts.

A nice starting point often begins with what the person enjoys, even if it isn’t on this list.

It can help to keep a few things in mind:

  • involve the person in the choice
  • build something together rather than doing it for them
  • keep the focus on participation, not just filling time

Everyday and important

  • Going to a cafĂ© and choosing what to order
  • Shopping for something they want such as clothes, tech, or a gift
  • Walking in a park, along the beach, or around the neighbourhood
  • Visiting a library or bookshop and choosing something to read
  • Visiting family or friends
  • Browsing shops without needing to buy anything
  • Turning an appointment into part of more activities out and about

Active and engaging

  • Swimming, whether it’s laps, floating, or just being in the water
  • Cycling along bike paths or around the neighbourhood
  • Going to the gym or exercising locally
  • Playing a casual sport such as tennis, kicking a ball, or shooting hoops in a park
  • Mini golf or visiting a driving range
  • Walking a hiking trail or exploring a lookout
  • Spending time in a sauna or steam room
  • Bowling

Out and about

  • Visiting markets and wandering through the stalls
  • Exploring museums or galleries and finding what interests them
  • Looking around op shops and trying things on
  • Going to a comedy night
  • Trivia nights or drag bingo
  • Watching a sunrise or sunset somewhere nice
  • Trying a class together such as art, cooking, pottery, or dance
  • Visiting a local event or festival
  • Going to the pub for a drink or meal
  • Watching local sport or live music

A quick check

Before settling on an activity, you might ask yourself:

  • Did the person choose this, or did I?
  • Will they be involved in it?
  • Can they help plan, prepare, or set it up?
  • Am I doing this with them rather than for them?

Often the best activities are the ones where the person feels included and part of what’s happening.
