🏠 Activity Ideas: At Home

Time at home can sometimes feel a bit quiet or unstructured. Sometimes that’s fine, but it can still help to have a few activity ideas ready.

This page is simply a collection of ideas. Think of it as a menu you can glance at whenever you need a bit of inspiration.

A small note before you begin

These ideas are just prompts.

A nice starting point often begins with what the person enjoys, even if it isn’t on this list.

It can help to keep a few things in mind:

  • involve the person in the choice
  • build something together rather than doing it for them
  • keep the focus on participation, not just filling time

Everyday life

  • Cooking something they enjoy, maybe from their culture or even childhood
  • Planning meals for the week and choosing together
  • Making a shopping list or ordering groceries
  • Using money and budgeting, such as counting, paying, or tracking spending
  • Writing a message, email, or letter to someone important
  • Planning going out or visit someone they want to see
  • Doing life admin or a bit of a spring clean

Skills, thinking, and communication

  • Reading together or listening to an audiobook or podcast
  • Creative writing, journalling, or drawing
  • Talking through real-life situations and practising conversations
  • Learning to use a phone, apps, or a computer
  • Playing video games together and taking turns choosing games

Relaxed but active

  • Making playlists or choosing music for different moods
  • Painting, drawing, or collage
  • Watching something together on TV or netflix
  • Board games, cards, or puzzles
  • Hanging with a pet if they have one
  • A simple exercise or stretching routine
  • Breathing exercises, meditation, or quiet relaxation

A few unexpected ideas

  • Taste-testing something like chocolate, fruit, or drinks
  • Create a “top 10” list together (movies, songs, places they’ve been)
  • Recreating a cafĂ© at home with music and a simple menu
  • Hosting something small such as afternoon tea or a movie night
  • Teach each other something (a skill they know or something you know)
  • Make a short video together (a cooking show, review, or funny clip)
  • Trying a themed day like Italian food, beach day, or movie marathon

A quick check

Before settling on an activity, some helpful questions include:

  • Did the person choose this, or did I?
  • Will they be involved in it?
  • Can they help plan, prepare, or set it up?
  • Am I doing this with them rather than for them?

Often the best activities are the ones where the person feels most included and engaged.
